Avatar 3: Release Date, Plot and Everything We Know So Far As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, the official title for the third installment in the "Avatar" film series directed by James Cameron has not been announced. The second film in the franchise is titled "Avatar: The Way of Water," but the title for the third film has not been revealed yet. I recommend keeping an eye on official announcements or news sources for any updates on the title of "Avatar 3."
Now that Avatar: The Way of Water has arrived on Disney+, fans will be wondering what's up next for Pandora as Avatar 3 is already on the way. So, here's everything we know so far.
After Avatar became the highest-grossing movie of all time, director James Cameron dedicated a number of years to building this world, with plans for four sequels - the first of which arrived in 2022 with Avatar: The Way of Water.
With the love for Cameron's Pandora clearly alive and well after the record-breaking Avatar 2, excitement to at an all-time high for Avatar 3 and the further adventures to come beyond it.
Avatar 3 Release Date: When Will It Come Out?
"Avatar" refers to several different things. Here are three possible interpretations:
"Avatar" (film): "Avatar" is a science fiction film directed by James Cameron, released in 2009. The film is set in the mid-22nd century and follows the story of a paralyzed former Marine named Jake Sully who is selected to participate in the Avatar Program on the planet Pandora. Avatars are genetically engineered bodies controlled by human operators, allowing them to interact with the native Na'vi species. The film was highly successful, both critically and commercially, and it is known for its groundbreaking visual effects and immersive 3D experience.
Avatar (online presence): An avatar can also refer to a digital representation or persona used by individuals on the internet. It can be an image, an animated character, or even a 3D model that represents a person in virtual spaces, forums, or social media platforms. Avatars are often used to express one's identity or to maintain a level of anonymity while engaging in online activities.
Avatar (Hinduism): In Hinduism, an avatar is a deity or divine figure that descends to Earth in a human or animal form to restore balance and righteousness in the world. Avatars are believed to be manifestations of the Supreme Being, such as Lord Vishnu, who is said to have ten main avatars, including Lord Rama and Lord Krishna. The avatars play significant roles in Hindu mythology and are revered by devotees.
With Avatar 3 still well over a year away, fans already know of 23 actors/characters who will appear in the threequel. Among the cast are the expected franchise mainstays along with newcomers like David Thewlis and Michelle Yeoh.

Avatar 3 Plot: What Will Happen?
Back in 2018, BBC News exclusively reported the titles for all four of James Cameron's Avatar sequels, over four years before Avatar 2 would even make its way into theaters under the title of The Way of Water.
The report claimed Avatar 3 will be called Avatar: The Seed Bearer, to be followed by two more sequels going by Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa. But while The Way of Water proved to be the accurate title for Avatar 2, the rest may not be quite as certain as they once seemed.
In February 2019, while speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Cameron urged caution on the titles, insisting the leaked names are "in consideration" but "no final decisions have been made:"
“Those titles are amongst titles that are in consideration and no final decisions have been made yet.”
Jon Landau added to the discussion in an interview with io9 in December 2022 and confirmed they have "decided on the titles" but appeared to cast doubt on the accuracy of The Seed Bearer and the other leaked titles:
“We have decided on titles, but I would not go by those other three titles that were out there. You know, if you roll the dice one in six times, you’ll pick the right number.”
So, at this time Avatar 3 has yet to receive an official title from Disney or James Cameron, with The Seed Bearer name being a possibility but no sure-fire thing.
Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water are streaming now on Disney+.
Avatar: The Way of Water's late streaming release likely comes down to Disney's expectation to continue profiting from the blockbuster for a while longer. As the sequel's theatrical run winds down and weekly hauls continue to dwindle, Disney will now be able to further its Avatar 2 profits through the digital home release.
Looking at another one of last year's blockbuster phenomenons, Paramount kept Top Gun: Maverick only in theaters for a fairly standard 88 days as its box office haul continued to grow to almost $1.5 billion. But after that, the studio waited for a further 121 days - 209 days total - before pushing the sequel on Paramount+.
Disney recently kept Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a theatrical exclusive for several weeks longer than most of the MCU's recent releases as its box office total continued to grow. However, when the Marvel Studios sequel did get its home release, the digital and Disney+ debuts came on the same day.
As the House of Mouse has held off on Avatar 2's Disney+ drop for so long since its digital release, clearly the shift in release strategy paid off. And that should come as no surprise after how many records The Way of Water broke in theaters to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time.
Avatar: The Way of Water will release exclusively on Disney+ on June 7.
As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, "Avatar 3" is the planned third installment in the "Avatar" film series directed by James Cameron. The "Avatar" franchise began with the release of the first film in 2009, which became the highest-grossing film of all time. The second film, titled "Avatar: The Way of Water," is currently in development and is expected to be released on December 16, 2022.
However, as of my knowledge cutoff, "Avatar 3" has not been released, and no specific information about its plot or production details is available. I recommend checking for updates from official sources or news outlets for the most recent information regarding the release of "Avatar 3."
The Way of Water's March 28 digital release came 101 days after its December 17 premiere - longer than the expected 90-day theatrical window. It was because of this typical window that many were predicting Avatar 2 to arrive on Disney+ in March.
With the streaming release now coming in June, Disney+ subscribers are getting to return to Pandora much later than expected.
To celebrate the announcement, Disney released a brand new poster and promotional teaser for the movie:
